Creating Momentum Pole Sport

I haven't really had time to update this blog recently, as I've been pouring all of my time and effort into the creation of my pole sport school. On top of that have been holidays, family time, as well as teaching regular classes (3 evenings per week and the occasional private lesson). Perhaps this blog, created out of a need during lockdown, will become more occasional from now on. I will try to add more videos to the stocks, all the same :-).

Finally finding a studio for my classes was a huge step, but only the start. Next, I began writing the status for the creation of my association (ASBL) and I created a website. A graphic designer friend kindly created an amazing logo for the studio and it all started falling into place.

Since the creation of the ASBL, I have been able to take out insurance and open a bank account. Of course, there were also the poles to buy! Now I'm just waiting for the last elements; bank card details, delivery of the last pole and confirmation of the insurance policy. Yesterday, I wrote and published a Covid-19 policy on the website and worked on other relevant documents. I've started to re-read a book on accountancy that helped me keep the accounts back when my husband and I had our companies in France. I'm a bit rusty, but ready and eager to pick that side of business management up again!

Sign up has started for my classes and 4 of the 6 weekly classes are half full already. In order to encourage beginners to sign up, I have organised an initiation on 30th August, which I hope I will be able to fill, bringing me in the students for the remaining classes. I have designed and ordered flyers, which I will begin to distribute from this weekend.

It's an exciting time, though busy. And it will get even busier, as I will retain classes in at least one other studio while I start out. I have huge plans for this studio, so I'm more than willing to put in the work!

I'm so proud of the website I created!! Take a look: www.momentumpolesport.be

Leaning into lockdown extension

The announcement came on Wednesday afternoon; lockdown until 3rd May. And after that? We will find out next Wednesday. I'm a bit late in offering online classes. I think that there was more enthusiasm to follow these in the initial weeks of lockdown, when everything was feeling a bit more novel and everyone was figuring out how they wanted to live their confinement experience. Now, 5 weeks in, a routine has set in, with less spontaneity and increasing disappointment. Unfortunately, I took a few weeks to catch up, being ill at the start, and so here I am with my ideas and enthusiasm! I hesitated before planning these classes. Maybe we would have our normal classes again in a couple of weeks anyway. Was the hassle worth it? What if people didn't sign up? How would I take that? With all these big names and top-level pole dancers offering online classes, what can I offer of interest? Weighing up the options, I felt it was worth a try. My philosophy is to try to see an opportuni...

First online class

I've arrived a little late at the party on this one :-). Many online live classes have already launched in the past few weeks, as well as a wealth of resources for learning pole from home. However, ill for the first two weeks of lockdown and recovering the third, I took a little more time to get there and I am grateful to my students for their patience! Yesterday, I got to teach my regular Sunday class, from my own living room! I thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with this group and we had a lot of fun. The difficulties included finding the right distance away from my computer when demonstrating, to be in full view, but audible, as well as making sure the participants muted their mics to avoid background noice and echo. For next time, I want to try to find a setup using a better camera and I might use my Britney mic if necessary. Surprisingly though, the class went very smoothly. I gave explanations and demonstrations for each move or combo and then watched my screen as the girls t...

IPSF

In early 2019, I discovered the IPSF. This was a huge event in my pole journey, and one that has helped me to focus and develop my own practice. The IPSF is a highly structured organisation (which suits me down to the ground :-)), that has already encouraged federations to be opened in 30-40 countries worldwide. Their aim is to bring Pole Sports to the Olympics, and it is not an empty goal; they are actively working towards this aim and taking the appropriate steps, one by one. Pole Sports within the International Pole Sports Federation, adheres to a 150-page code of points, for which I have already passed an exam to attest to my knowledge. Competition participants must demonstrate strength, flexibility and the ability to perform spins on both the static and spinning pole. The rules provide a structure to preparing for a competiton and an important point of reference; on the other hand the realisation of a competition routine can be tricky when trying to adhere to all the rules! This...
